The centerpiece of the film is Lew Ayres’ performance as Paul. This is a war movie from the perspective of the losers, visually spectacular but by turns infuriating and heartbreaking. By contrast, the new German version of All Quiet on the Western Front feels like an experience that’s been stripped to the bone morally, spiritually, and dramatically. In a discussion of what causes war, one soldier says, “One country offends another.” Another responds, “What does that mean?” “A mountain in Germany offends a field in France?” “Well, one people offends another,” answers his friend. When the men engage in hand-to-hand combat in the trenches, it is clear that they are sticking each other with bayonets and bashing heads in. The tank attack scene may be one of the most scary and harrowing war scenes ever filmed.
It does a great job of being an anti war film. Directed by Edward Berger, it stars Felix Kammerer, Albrecht Schuch, Daniel Brhl, Sebastian Hlk, Aaron Hilmer, Edin Hasanovic and Devid Striesow. You can see the ending coming by about 15 mins into the film but that doesn’t make it any less of a gut punch. All Quiet on the Western Front is a 1930 film about the horrors of the First World War and the deep detachment from civilian life felt by many German men.
The movie is surprisingly gory with vivid, exciting battle scenes, but they are not glamorized the way they are in most films.
